What is an AIM file?

AIM files mostly belong to AOL Instant Messenger. AIM files serve more than one purpose.
Most of these files are AOL Instant Messenger log files that record chat histories in plain text.
Other AIM files are used in different contexts:

Anstoss Image File – stores image data, sometimes related to the MrSID format.

3D Image File – holds 3D image information; see 3dMD for details.

Animation Information Model – an XML file that contains animation data used with 3D Studio Max; more info is available at Autodesk 3ds Max.

How do you open AIM files?

You need a suitable software like AOL Instant Messenger to open an AIM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AIM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AIM file directly in the browser:. AIM file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the AIM files produces the following result:

As a file extension, AIM isn't very common and is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in AIM files are:

• 70% of all AIM files have the same signature FFFF0000000600020001. The content consists of binary data as well as text and words. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 63 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. The files contain the following words: 10000001, 480048, FFFF0000000600020001 and -7EFB6EBE. These files are attributed to instant, message and money, and often contain personal information.
• 10% of all AIM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "AIM" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 1 KB to 54 KB in size, with a median of 35 KB. The keywords AIMRES2.00, IMSLDXT and TILEDIM are typical for these files.
