All about ANS Files
The ANS file type is primarily associated with PabloDraw.
What is an ANS file?
ANS files are mainly ANSI art files that store text with embedded ANSI escape codes. These escape codes control text color, cursor movement, and screen formatting in terminal environments.
Some ANS files hold other kinds of data. For example, they can be:
- ANSI art: Files that use escape sequences to create text images. More details can be found at ANSI escape code.
- Simulation Results: Outputs from programs like ANSYS Fluent or ANSYS Electronics Desktop in a Text Presentation Format.
- Audio Files: Data for audio navigation systems or specific audio formats like DICE-AM.
- Structured Documents: XML files containing text adventures or adult stories.
- Notes and Payroll: Files used for annotated notes or German payroll data.
These files are plain text files that may require special viewing tools. For ANSI art, a dedicated ANSI art viewer (such as PabloDraw) or a text editor with ANSI support will show the intended design. If the file holds simulation or structured data, the originating software is usually needed to display or process the contents properly.
FilExt.com tip: Understanding the file's origin is key, as the same ANS extension can mean different things based on context.
How to open ANS files
You need a suitable software like PabloDraw to open an ANS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ANS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ANS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ANS files:
- PabloDraw
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ANS files are often referred to as PabloDraw simple text files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

- ANSYS (Model Data) by ANSYS, Inc.ANSYS specializes in the application of finite element methods to solve engineering design challenges. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 2F 54 49 54 4C 45 20 4D 6F 64 65 6C 3A 20, ASCII: /TITLE Model: .
- HotDocs (Answer File) by Matthew Bender & Company, a member of the LexisNexis GroupContains answers filled out by user. Used up to HotDocs 5.2, where .ANX files (XML) became the standard.
- Word (Text and Layout) by Microsoft CorporationOffice Word is an authoring program that gives you the ability to create and share documents using a set of writing tools.
ANS file format:
To find out what program is needed to open ANS files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ANS files comes to the following conclusion:
You will often come across the ANS file type. This includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all ANS files have the same signature TPF0. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 240 bytes to 340 bytes in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Data, String and TPF0. The following filename is common: 1001_0.ans or 1005_0.ans.
- 25% of all ANS files are ANSI escape sequence text files. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The files are often between 3 KB and 120 KB in size. The file name ascii-art.ans or ansi-art.utf.ans is typical for these files.
All other ANS files (50%) have no consistent format, the following 5 formats can be found: ANS and DICE. Sometimes used for sample, rounding or error. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ANS file!
Technical Data for ANS File Extension

an ans text file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ANS files
- Associate the ANS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text files. Because only the current version supports the latest ANS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available PabloDraw update.
- To make sure that your ANS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ANS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
