What is an APP file?

APP files mostly belong to macOS Finder. APP files are application packages that bundle executable code and associated resources.
On macOS, an APP file is an application bundle: a folder with a defined structure that the system displays as a single file.
These files are not uniform and can be built for various platforms. They may include:
  • FoxPro/Visual FoxPro applications: Legacy business apps using proprietary code.
  • ZIP-based executables: Compressed packages that serve as executable applications, sometimes linked to Android packaging.
  • Microsoft Dynamics NAV extensions: Packages that extend Business Central functionalities. More details can be found at Microsoft's documentation.
  • Linux executables (ELF): Binary files designed to run on Linux systems.
  • CDI application files: Used for Compact Disc Interactive control panels.
  • Huawei firmware updates: These update files are tailored for Huawei devices; visit Huawei Consumer for more information.
  • macOS bundles: Formats like AppleDouble or macOS application bundles hold all resources needed for a macOS app. See Apple Developer for specifics.
  • Other platform packages: Some APP files are used with Symbian OS, Wii U systems, or even encapsulate Salesforce definitions in XML or PDF formats.
  • FilExt.com tip: Each APP file is built for a specific system and requires its native runtime environment. To open or inspect one, use the appropriate tool (for example, use 'Show Package Contents' on macOS or an archive tool for ZIP-based formats).

How do you open APP files?

You need a suitable software like macOS Finder to open an APP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your APP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a APP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    APP file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the APP files comes to the following conclusion:

The file type with the extension 'APP' includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 80% of all APP files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. Interfaze Application, Team Developer / SQLWindows application, Mac2OSX, XML, ELF and NAVX. Often described as sales, microsoft, chapter or install. You can get all the details of your APP file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .app file to analyze" above.
