What is an ART file?

ART files mostly belong to Illustrator by Adobe. ART filename extension is mainly associated with highly compressed images stored in the proprietary ART format used to compress images on AOL's proxy servers. By using these highly compressed ART images, online services were able to increase their image download speed and reduce bandwidth usage. Alphacam, a CAD/CAM design and programming solution stores the router tool of a project in an ART file. ArtCAM, a computer aided manufacturing software stores 2D and 3D models in ART files. These files may also contain specifications for cutting, printing, or engraving designs created with the program. ART filename extension is also associated with the embroidery design format used by older BERNINA embroidery machines. Such ART files contain embroidery designs that can be viewed with embroidery software such as ArtLink. Video games developed with Build 3D game engine store game data such as textures, tiles, and sprites in a compressed ART file.

How to open an ART file

You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open an ART file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. ART file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the ART files produces the following result:

ART is a very commonly used file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

30% of all ART files are associated with Gerber artwork. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The files are on average 62 KB in size and range from 3 KB to 470 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords G04 ================== begin FILE IDENTIFICATION RECORD ==================*, G04 Layout Name, Layout Name, Film Name, G04 Film Name and G04 File Format: Gerber RS274X are typical for these files. The file name top.art or BOTTOM.art is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to assy, silk, layer, outline, assembly, drill, mask and paste.
25% of all ART files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). ART files contain an app name ArtCAM Pro, Autodesk ArtCAM Premium 2018, ArtCAM Jewelsmith or Carveco Maker 1. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 05165c73-b523-11ce-b1c3-00aa0048620c or 00022c20-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections with names like ArtCAM and SummaryInformation. The files are often between 51 KB and 20 MB in size. These files can be linked to door, design, free, logo, deskandtower and router.
