Opening an AS File
The AS file type is primarily associated with Animate.
What is an AS file?
- Main use: ActionScript is a scripting language developed by Macromedia and now taken over by Adobe Systems. AS files, written using ActionScript language consist of variables, functions, and other file references. AS files are generally used in the generation of interactive Flash applications and are hence saved in unison with the animated movie format (FLA) which reference it. These files can be edited using Adobe Animate (known earlier as Macromedia Flash) or any other basic text editing applications in Windows and Mac OS environments.
- Other Uses: AS files can also refer to source code files written using a scripting library called AngelScript. AngelScript is used for extension of applications' functionality through external scripts in AS file format. These AS files constitute functions, variables, object handles, expressions, statements, and script classes. AS file format can also stand for AppleSingle format and is used by older Macintosh systems running on A/UX operating system for archiving purposes. It stores the resource fork and the data fork files in a single file and is now considered obsolete.
How can I open an AS file?
You need a suitable software like Animate to open an AS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert AS files:
- Animate by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. AS files are often referred to as Animate developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- A/UX by AppleA/UX is the first Unix-like operating system in the Macintosh family, developed by Apple. The AS extension is associated with the AppleSingle file format that was used by A/UX. AppleSingle files combine "dual-forked" Macintosh files into a single file, making it possible to store and transport them on platforms that cannot deal with dual-forked files. - Dispatch (Alaska/Horizon Timetable File) by Scott Andrew BortonDispatch is a software that allows users to view airline routes overlaid on a map. Based on the system clock and flight timetables, it can also filter for display routes which should currently have airplanes in the air, as well as the aircrafts' approximate progress on their scheduled routes. The AS file format is for the Alaska/Horizon timetable in Dispatch. This file format is classified as Data.
- Dreamweaver (ActionScript source code file) by AdobeDreamweaver is web development software. It provides support for ActionScript, a scripting language based on ECMAScript that is used for the development of interactive applications that can run on the Flash Player platform. The AS file format stores source code written in ActionScript. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Dreamweaver on Wikipedia, Writing ActionScript with Dreamweaver
- Planning Analytics (spreadsheet file) by IBMPlanning Analytics is a cross-platform suite of software that provides users with business performance management functionalities. It allows the implementation of planning, budgeting, and forecasting solutions, along with analytical and reporting applications. It was formerly known as Applix TM1. The AS (Applix spreadsheet) file format stores spreadsheets created and used by IBM Planning Analytics. This file format is classified as Spreadsheet. AS file format:
To view or edit AS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the AS files comes to the following conclusion:
The AS file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all AS files are based on the well-known Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 1 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords import flash, extends, display, package and public class are typical for these files. Such files are related to color and event.
- 5% of all AS files save the data in GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 200 KB. Files like these are sometimes connected to save.
The remaining 45% of all AS files are files with no common format, the following 6 formats can be found: Mac AppleSingle encoded data, BQwhvwGCxUJB, class and HSERHSER. The category is save, attachment, game, mail, weapon, sonic or data. Just click the "Choose your .as file to view" button on this page to find out what your AS file is.

an as ActionScript source code file is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with AS files
- Associate the AS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open actionscript source code files. Because only the current version supports the latest AS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Animate update.
- To make sure that your AS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .AS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
