What is an ASF file?

ASF files mostly belong to Media Player by Microsoft. ASF, short for Advanced Systems Format is an open file format specification used for the storage, streaming, and playback of synchronized multimedia data video, animation, text, graphics, and sound over a network. ASF files can also be played locally with programs such as Media Player and VLC. Contents of ASF video or audio files are separated into sections called "objects". They include the Header, Data, and the optional Index object. The Header object contains information about the file itself, Data object contains the media streams, and the Index object provides support for random access to data within the file. Statgraphics, a data analysis and statistical modeling software saves various data in a different ASF file format.

How to open an ASF file

You need a suitable software like Media Player to open an ASF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
