Opening ASN Files
The ASN file type is primarily associated with NCBI BLAST.
What is an ASN file
How to open an ASN file
You need a suitable software like NCBI BLAST to open an ASN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ASN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ASN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from ASN files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...
You can extract texts from ASN file or capture a preview screenshot using our online ASN file viewer:- Just click the "Choose your .asn file to view" button on this page.
- After your file is opened in browser,
- click "Save as..." in the menu.
- Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
- Download the converted file.
Programs that open and convert ASN files:
- NCBI BLAST
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ASN files are often referred to as NCBI BLAST data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Atlantis Word Processor (Sound Scheme) by Rising Sun Solutions, Inc.Atlantis is a compact word processor that is fast-loading, but still powerful.
- Chemical Interchange Format (Old Form)The Mime types used with this association are: chemical/ncbi-asn1.
- GameSpy Arcade (Skin) by IGN Entertainment, Inc.GameSpy Arcade is a shareware multiplayer game server browsing utility. GameSpy arcade allows players to view and connect to available multiplayer games, and chat to other users of the service. Related links: Wikipedia GameSpy Arcade Page
ASN file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the ASN files comes to the following conclusion:
The ASN file extension is quite common and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in ASN files are:
- 55% of all ASN files have the same signature Blast4-request. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 8 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 8 KB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: Blast4-request ::= {, body queue-search {, queries bioseq-set {, seq {, program "blastn", service "megablast", service "plain", Query, local str and local id 45965. A common filename is AP_Biology_Fossil_Gene1_search_strategy.asn. Such ASN files store data about strategy, search, gene, biology, fossil, blast and extracted.
- 7% of all ASN files save the data in certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 85 MB. Some examples of file names are Compound_000000001_000500000.asn.
All other ASN files (38%) have no uniform format, often, for example, Atlantis Word Processor Sound Scheme, DOC, Seq, Bio and PssmWithParameters. Sometimes used for scoremat, pssm, sdpoutputcdr, alignment, data, blastn or sgsn. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ASN file!

an asn text-based data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ASN files
- Associate the ASN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text-based data files. Because only the current version supports the latest ASN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available NCBI BLAST update.
- To make sure that your ASN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ASN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
