Opening an ASX File
The ASX file type is primarily associated with Media Player.
What is an ASX file
<asx version="3.0">
<title>Example Playlist</title>
<entry>
<title>Song Title</title>
<ref href="https://example.com/song_name.wma" />
<author>Author's Name</author>
</entry>
</asx>
Some MIME types associated with ASX playlist files include video/x-ms-asf-plugin (an embedding-only MIME type used to force a v7 scriptable interface) and application/x-mplayer2 (an embedding-only MIME type used to force a v6 scriptable interface). Alpha Anywhere, an integrated development environment for developing web applications, stores indexing data generated by queries in ASX files. Such ASX files are only stored temporarily on users' computers.
How do you open ASX files?
You need a suitable software like Media Player to open an ASX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ASX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ASX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

ASX file format:
To find out what program is needed to open ASX files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the ASX files is as follows:
The ASX file ending includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all ASX files have the same signature http. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are often between 54 bytes and 680 bytes in size. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. http://www.manavai.com and songs. Some examples of file names are s.asx. Files like these have the following tags: japan.
- 30% of all ASX files belong to Advanced Stream Redirector. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The average file size is 330 bytes with most files being between 160 bytes and 2 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <ENTRY>, REF HREF, TITLE, <ASX VERSION="3.0">, <ASX version = "3.0"> and http. Files like these are sometimes connected to edits and audio.
All the rest of the ASX files (35%) have different formats, such as XML. These files sometimes refer to other, side or graphics. If you want to find out which format your ASX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .asx file to analyze".

- Update your software that should actually open playlists. Because only the current version supports the latest ASX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Media Player update.
- To make sure that your ASX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ASX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
