What is an AVS file?

AVS files mostly belong to VLC by VideoLAN. Files with AVS extension usually contain high resolution digital video and audio content compressed using the Audio Video Coding Standard's (AVS) specification. Such AVS files are used in TV, streaming, and other media applications. Several media and non-media software use AVS file format to save scripts or the app's and users' configuration data. Winamp, a cross-platform media player stores its Advanced Visualization Studio (AVS) plug-in's presets in AVS files. Contents of such AVS files include animation and settings for creating visualizations during audio playback. Avid software such as Xpress and Media Composer save project preferences in AVS files. Parameters in the AVS preferences file include media formats, media authoring settings etc. AviSynth, a video editing software stores scripts used to automate video editing operations (e.g. resizing, dubbing) in AVS files. Photoshop, a raster image editing software stores image adjustment data and settings in AVS files called Variations files.

How do you open AVS files?

You need a suitable software like VLC to open an AVS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your AVS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a AVS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

AVS file format:

To view or edit AVS files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the AVS files is as follows:

AVS is a very commonly used file extension and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in AVS files:

All the rest of the AVS files (83%) have different formats, often, for example, Winamp Advanced Visualization Studio File and sSvA. These files sometimes refer to prog, stream or video. You can get all the details of your AVS file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .avs file to view this image" above.
