BAK file format:
To find out what program is needed to open BAK files, you need to determine the file format. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the BAK files is as follows:
BAK is a very widely used file extension. The file type includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in BAK files are:
- 15% of all BAK files are based on the zip format, i.e. a BAK file contains several compressed files. A BAK file can contain up to 320 files (mostly 3 - 150). Customary file names are Favorites.list, Photos.list and \Card\. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 18 KB to 9 GB in size, with a median of 180 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. DeviceInfo.list, <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> and <plist version="1.0">. iPhone_20180601.bak is a typical file name. Files like these are about phone, galaxy, xiaomi, note, samsung, redmi, huawei and plus.
- 15% of all BAK files start with the bytes AC10, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. BAK files can be up to 110 MB in size, but are often around 60 KB - 6 MB. These files are often associated with plan, layout, floor, drawing, site and plans.
All other BAK files (70%) have no consistent format, such as Microsoft SQL Server backup, MIUI Backup data, DOC, JSON, XML, SQL, EXE, GZIP, JetDB, Source, RIFF, JPG, vpncbackup, REMF and ttp. Sometimes used for android, sollet, notes, miui, settings or store. If you want to find out what your BAK file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
