Opening a BIT File
The BIT file type is primarily associated with Vivado.
What is a BIT file?
How to open BIT files
You need a suitable software like Vivado to open a BIT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BIT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BIT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

BIT file format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the BIT files produces the following result:
The BIT file extension covers different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all BIT files are Xilinx Bitstream files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 280 KB and 9 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. UserID, 0XFFFFFFFF and Version. These files can be linked to wrapper, kona, fpga, quad, generator, design, system, level, pulse, right and left.
- 3% of all BIT files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FF 00" at the beginning. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 6 KB to 890 KB in size, with a median of 590 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: Part, Architecture, Bitstream Status, Design name, Final Version, Lattice Semiconductor Corporation Bitstream and Diamond (64-bit).
All other BIT files (37%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Bit Archiver compressed archive and Lotus Manuscript bitmap. Files like these are sometimes linked to table, item, bitstream, sprites, items or ogma. You can get all the details of your BIT file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .bit file to play" above.

How to solve problems with BIT files
- Associate the BIT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open bitstreams. Because only the current version supports the latest BIT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Xilinx manufacturer website after an available Vivado update.
- To make sure that your BIT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BIT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
