What is a BMP file?

BMP files mostly belong to Photos by Microsoft. BMP is the filename extension of image files stored in the Bitmap image file format developed by Microsoft. A BMP file is made up of a 14-byte header, a device-independent bitmap header, extra bit masks, ICC color profile, color table, and a pixel array all of which make up a bitmap image. BMP file format is mainly used to store uncompressed, two-dimensional images with variable color depths and color profiles. Because it is uncompressed, the file size of a BMP image file is usually large. You can view BMP images with Paint, Photos, Preview, Photoshop and many other image viewers. The most common MIME types of BMP image files are image/bmp and image/x-bmp.

How to open BMP files

You need a suitable software like Photos to open a BMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
