Opening a BMP File
The BMP file type is primarily associated with Photos.
What is a BMP file?
How to open BMP files
You need a suitable software like Photos to open a BMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BMP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BMP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

BMP file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BMP files is as follows:
BMP is one of the most common file extensions and uses a standardized format supported by many programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 80% of all BMP files belong to Windows Bitmap. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 4 KB to 5 MB in size, with a median of 520 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Files like these are sometimes connected to resultat, french, image, chromium, logo, bitmap, screen, bettyt, splash and home.
- 2% of all BMP files save the data in JPG file format. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 59 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 6 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: JFIF. Files like these are sometimes connected to compressmyimage.
All the rest of the BMP files (18%) have different formats, such as Windows Device Dependent Bitmap, Award BIOS logo bitmap, PNG, SQL and RIFF. The category is icon, father, logant, crazy, tunn or steg. Just click the "Choose your .bmp file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your BMP file is.

a bmp bitmap image is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BMP files
- Associate the BMP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open bitmap images. Because only the current version supports the latest BMP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Photos update.
- To make sure that your BMP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BMP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
