CAL file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the CAL files is as follows:
The CAL extension is very commonly used. This CAL file itself is among the most popular common file types and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in CAL files are:
- 65% of all CAL files are associated with CALS raster bitmap. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. CAL files can be up to 3 MB in size, but are often around 30 KB - 470 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as srcdocid: NONE dstdocid: NONE. Such files sometimes refer to plan, cals and type.
- 3% of all CAL files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 210 KB with most files being between 160 KB and 1 MB in size. Such CAL files store data about calendar and baby.
All the rest of the CAL files (32%) have different formats, often e.g. SuperCalc worksheet, Windows Calendar, QV Map Calibration data, SQL and Design. They are often associated with ambk, backup, folder, native, calibration, tiamat or base. If you want to find out what your CAL file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a cal monochrome bitmap image is a special file format by XnSoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CAL files
- Associate the CAL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open monochrome bitmap images. Because only the current version supports the latest CAL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the XnSoft manufacturer website after an available XnView update.
- To make sure that your CAL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CAL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
