Opening a CBR File
The CBR file type is primarily associated with CDisplay.
What is a CBR file?
- Primary use: CBR usually stores PNG or JPEG files into a single archive file. This format is also used to compress and archive GIF BMP and TIFF as well. CBR can also be used for the sequential viewing of images, comic books, and manga. Comic book files use different filename extensions to indicate the type of format and encoding used to compress them. For example, CBR uses RAR, while CB7 uses 7Z, while CBA uses ACE. Apart from computers, comic book files may also be accessed via tablets or phones.
- Adoption: CBR is currently supported by a variety of programs across many operating systems and platforms such as Windows, MacOS , Unix, and Android. The format was first used by the CDisplay sequential viewer, but ever since, many different programs that support this format, such as Evince, Gonvisor and FBReader have been developed.
How can I open a CBR file?
You need a suitable software like CDisplay to open a CBR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CBR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CBR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CBR file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the CBR files is as follows:
The CBR file extension is quite widespread and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in CBR files:
- 85% of all CBR files are based on the well-known RAR file format. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. CBR files are between 9 MB and 140 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Rar!. Files like these are about book, digital, empire, zone, comics, ultron, minutemen, batman and locke.
- 8% of all CBR files use ZIP compression, that is, a CBR file includes multiple compressed files. The number of files included is on average 42 and ranges from 13 to 130. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are often between 5 MB and 77 MB in size. These files can be linked to book, updated, neighbor, archive, comicon and life.
The remaining 7% of all CBR files are different files with different signatures, the following 3 formats exist: 7z. The category is spider, last, info, wars, star, covers or book. If you want to find out what your CBR file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
