Opening a CFS File
The CFS file type is primarily associated with Lucene.
What is a CFS file
- Main Use: CFS files are used in the distribution of software distribution of packages. CFS file format is based on ISO-9660, Joliet Extensions, ISO-9660:1999, and Compact ISO. Most applications that open ISO files can also open CFS files since CFS files exhibit compatibility with the ISO file format. Since ISO files have large-format variety, implementation of reading and modification support is hard and the CFS format solves these issues by restricting the format variety to ISO-9660 specification that has relaxed usage guidelines and specific extensions. Using a command-line utility called Ptiso, CFS files can be created in Windows and Linux run machines.
- Other Uses: CFS file format is also used by Lucene software developed by Apache. Lucene is a Java-based open-source text search engine library that uses CFS files as optional virtual files to contain all the index files into one compound archive. CFS Console, a console application from Zaplots, is used for playing video games on Windows PCs using CFS files.
How to open a CFS file
You need a suitable software like Lucene to open a CFS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CFS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CFS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CFS files:
- Lucene by Apache
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CFS files are often referred to as Lucene data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- CFS Console by ZaplotsCFS extensions are used by Zaplots CFS Console files for installing software from Zaplots. The program and the associated file format are now obsolete. This file format is classified as Data.
- File Mount Audit Package (compressed container file) by Pismo TechnicThe file extension CFS (Compact File Set) is an open file format developed by Pismo Technic and the file stores data in a compressed form. File Mount Audit Package uses this format and lets users mount images with ISO extensions as virtual folders, access files with extension ZIP as folders, and is used for storing CD and DVD disk images. This file format is classified as Disk Image. Related links: CFS File format Wikipedia page
- Signal (signal data file) by Cambridge Electronic Design LimitedSignal delivers sweep-based data capture and analysis, stimulus generation and control using one of the CED 1401 family of data acquisition peripherals. CFS stands for CED Filing System, CFS data files can hold a variety of experimental data, primarily sampled waveforms. This file format is classified as Data. CFS file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the CFS files:
An CFS file is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 30% of all CFS files start with the bytes ?×l, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 1 KB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 27 KB. It is a modern file type. The keywords Lucene50CompoundData are typical for these files. _0.cfs or _2.cfs is a typical file name.
- 20% of all CFS files start with the bytes 08 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. CFS files are between 310 bytes and 5 MB in size. _0.cfs or _1.cfs is a typical file name.
The remaining 50% of all CFS files are files with no common format, the following 8 formats can be found: cfs and CEDFILE. These files sometimes refer to nonspecific, firmware, pakistan, android, content, tunisia, effect, image or qatar. Just click the "Choose your .cfs file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your CFS file is.
Technical Data for CFS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a cfs virtual compound file is a special file format by Apache and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CFS files
- Associate the CFS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open virtual compound files. Because only the current version supports the latest CFS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apache manufacturer website after an available Lucene update.
- To make sure that your CFS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CFS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
