Opening CMX Files
The CMX file type is primarily associated with CorelDRAW.
What is a CMX file?
How to open a CMX file
You need a suitable software like CorelDRAW to open a CMX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CMX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CMX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CMX file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the CMX files:
The CMX file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all CMX files are associated with Corel Metafile Exchange Image files, which internally utilize the well-known RIFF format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 11 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: Windows 3.1, Corel Binary Meta File, CMX1cont, RIFF and MbP?. Files like these are about logo, aardvark, baner, font and image.
- 5% of all CMX files are based on the well-known XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are often between 48 KB and 420 KB in size. The keywords <CADMeasureXML>, <General>, <ProjectId>0</ProjectId></Session>, <Session>, HighestId, SessionId and <Version>19.5.57.0</Version> are typical for these files. Files like these are about measure.
The remaining 5% of all CMX files are files with no common format. They are often associated with measure. If you want to find out what your CMX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with CMX files
- Associate the CMX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest CMX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available CorelDRAW update.
- To make sure that your CMX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CMX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
