Opening CNC Files
The CNC file type is primarily associated with Mach3.
What is a CNC file?
Overview: CNC files contain the precise instructions needed to operate computer numerical control machines. They are used in computer‐aided manufacturing to define tool paths, feed rates, spindle speeds, and other operational details that drive machine movements.
Functionality: The file holds commands that can be very similar to G-code. These instructions may be plain text or use a compound file format. They are produced by CAM software and then processed by controllers like Mach3, GRBL, or LinuxCNC. The commands in the file tell the CNC machine exactly what actions to perform.
- Machine instructions: Command a tool’s movement along defined paths.
- Operational settings: Set feed rates, speeds, and tool changes.
- Manufacturing process: Bridge the gap between digital design and physical production.
Multiple companies such as CNC Master, CutPro, Mach3, Vectric Aspire, and Magic NC use or support this file type. For additional technical information, visit Mach3 or check out resources provided by Vectric Aspire and the GRBL documentation.
FilExt.com tip: These files are key in computer numerical control, ensuring that machines perform as intended in tasks such as milling, drilling, and cutting. While you can view the commands with a text editor, using dedicated CNC software or simulators helps avoid errors before running them on a machine.
How to open a CNC file
You need a suitable software like Mach3 to open a CNC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CNC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CNC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from CNC files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...
If you want to extract texts from CNC file or capture a screenshot, you can use our free Online CNC File Viewer:- To do so, click the "Choose your .cnc file to view" button above.
- Your CNC file will then be displayed in the browser.
- Now click on "Save as..." at the top of the page.
- Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
- Your file will be converted and downloaded.
Programs that open and convert CNC files:
- Mach3
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CNC files are often referred to as Mach3 data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

CNC file format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the CNC files produces the following result:
CNC is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 10% of all CNC files start with the magic bytes % , which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. CNC files can be up to 4 MB in size, but are often around 490 bytes - 2 MB.
- 10% of all CNC files have the same signature G2. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. CNC files can be up to 100 KB in size, but are often around 300 bytes - 33 KB. The files contain the following words: (CutPro Wizard, CutPro Wizard - Load Material, Load Material, M37 T1, M36 T1, Mild Steel and G59 V502 F34.
All other CNC files (80%) have different formats, such as ProNest and AddRegPart. They are often associated with nest. If you want to find out which format your CNC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .cnc file to view".
Technical Data for CNC File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a cnc instruction file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CNC files
- Associate the CNC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open instruction files. Because only the current version supports the latest CNC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Mach3 update.
- To make sure that your CNC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CNC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
