Opening a CPP File

The CPP file type is primarily associated with C++ Builder.

CPPFile Extension CPP
File extension: CPP
File type:  source code

What is a CPP file?

CPP files mostly belong to C++ Builder by Embarcadero. A CPP file contains source code written in C++ programming language. The contents of this file are saved as text. They include functions, classes, libraries, headers, control flow statements, sets etc. You can write, compile, and debug a CPP file using GNU Compiler Collection or integrated development environments such as C++ Builder, Eclipse, and Xcode. Another type of CPP file is a 3D scene created with Maya 3D modeling and animation software. This file is written in OpenGL.

How do you open CPP files?

You need a suitable software like C++ Builder to open a CPP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CPP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CPP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from CPP files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

You can extract texts from CPP file or capture a preview screenshot using our online CPP file viewer:
  1. To do so, click the "Choose your .cpp file to view" button above.
  2. After your file is opened in browser,
  3. click "Save as..." in the menu.
  4. Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
  5. Download the converted file.

Programs that open and convert CPP files:

  1. C++ Builder by Embarcadero
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CPP files are often referred to as C++ Builder developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. CA-Cricket Presents (presentation) by Broadcom
CA-Cricket Presents is a discontinued presentation software for classic Windows and macOS operating systems. A presentation created with CA-Cricket Presents is saved in a CPP file. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Code::Blocks (source code) by The Code::Blocks Team
Code::Blocks is an open source integrated development environment compatible with C/C++ and Fortran compilers. It uses a CPP file to store C++ source code. This file format is classified as Developer.
  4. Maya (3D scene) by Autodesk
Maya is a cross-platform 3D animation/modeling software with scripting support. A 3D scene created with Maya is saved in a CPP file. This file format is classified as 3D Image.
  5. Visual Studio (source code) by Microsoft
Visual Studio is an integrated development environment with support for .NET, C#, C++, and other languages. It uses a CPP file to store C++ application source code. This file format is classified as Developer.
  6. Xcode (source code) by Apple
Xcode is a macOS integrated development environment for developing applications in various programming languages. C++ source code created with Xcode is saved in a CPP file. This file format is classified as Developer.

CPP file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the CPP files comes to the following conclusion:

You will often come across the CPP file type. This mainly uses a defined CPP format. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other CPP files (25%) have no uniform format. The category is project, solution, message, config, voice or lost. If you want to find out what your CPP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a cpp source code is a special file format by Embarcadero and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with CPP files

  • Associate the CPP file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open source codes. Because only the current version supports the latest CPP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Embarcadero manufacturer website after an available C++ Builder update.
  • To make sure that your CPP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .CPP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
