All about CRT Files
The CRT file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.
What is a CRT file?
How to open a CRT file
You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a CRT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CRT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CRT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert CRT files:
- OpenSSL by OpenSSL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CRT files are often referred to as OpenSSL web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- CC64 (cartridge image) by Håkan SundellCC64 is a computer application which emulates the Commodore 64 computer. It can mount and run a CRT file containing the disk image of a Commodore 64. This file format is classified as Disk Image.
- cron (scheduled task) by cron Developerscron is a job scheduler built into UNIX-like platforms. A crontab (cron table) containing a scheduled task can be saved as a CRT file. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: CronHowto
- GlobalSign (security certificate) by GlobalSignGlobalSign is a digital certificate/key automation provider and management service. It distributes public key certificates as CRT files. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: Apache: Install SSL, Cisco ASA: Install SSL
- Oracle Database (terminal settings) by OracleOracle Database is a multi-model database management system with SQL, NoSQL, and object storage support. Its terminal settings are saved in a CRT file. This file format is classified as Settings.
- Soft Concert (karaoke) by Soft ConvertSoft Concert is a discontinued karaoke music player. It uses karaoke clips saved in files with CRT filename extension. This file format is classified as Audio.
CRT file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the CRT files produces the following result:
CRT is a very widely used file extension. The file type uses a standardized format supported by many programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all CRT files are based on the well-known certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. CRT files can be up to 210 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 2 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: ----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----. A usual file name is certificate.crt or ca_bundle.crt. Such files sometimes refer to bundle, cert, cabundle, services, root, secure, aaacertificate and validation.
- 1% of all CRT files use the same file format, which have the signature NATURAL DRAFT COOLING TOWER: TRIPLE CLUSTER - EXAMPLE. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The file size is in the range of 20 KB to 56 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Cartesian Coordinate Format, Coordinate Format, ANNUAL; Cartesian, NATURAL DRAFT COOLING TOWER: TRIPLE CLUSTER - EXAMPLE USING NRC SURFACE MET. DATA, PLUME, TABLE, ENERGY, LOSS, DEPOSITION and SOLAR. A usual file name is TotSlrLss.crt or PlmLenFrq.crt.
All the rest of the CRT files (14%) have different formats, frequently e.g. X.509v3 security certificate, Security Certificate, C64 Cartridge image, LINEAR, MII and CIRCULAR. Sometimes used for server, sectigorsadomain, client, usertrustrsaaaaca, authority or star. If you want to find out what your CRT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a crt security certificate is a special file format by OpenSSL and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CRT files
- Associate the CRT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open security certificates. Because only the current version supports the latest CRT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenSSL manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
- To make sure that your CRT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CRT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
