All about CRT Files

The CRT file type is primarily associated with OpenSSL.

CRTFile Extension CRT
File extension: CRT
File type:  security certificate

What is a CRT file?

CRT files mostly belong to OpenSSL by OpenSSL. A CRT file is an X.509 public key certificate for authenticating data transferred over HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure). The CRT certificate is usually saved as Base64-encoded data representing the hostname, organization, and other basic information of an entity. A CRT file is similar to a PEM or CER file. X.509 public certificate standard is defined by the International Telecommunication Union. Another type of CRT file contains terminal settings used by Oracle Database. CRT is also the filename extension of a crontab (cron table) containing a scheduled job/task to be executed by cron.

How to open a CRT file

You need a suitable software like OpenSSL to open a CRT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CRT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CRT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to extract texts from CRT files or capture a screenshot to PDF, JPG, DOCX, TXT, ...

You can extract texts from CRT file or capture a preview screenshot using our online CRT file viewer:
  1. Just click the "Choose your .crt file to view" button on this page.
  2. After your file is opened in browser,
  3. click "Save as..." in the menu.
  4. Then choose the file format (e.g. JPG, PDF, DOCX, TXT, ...) you want.
  5. Your file will be converted and downloaded.

Programs that open and convert CRT files:

  1. OpenSSL by OpenSSL
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. CRT files are often referred to as OpenSSL web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. CC64 (cartridge image) by Håkan Sundell
CC64 is a computer application which emulates the Commodore 64 computer. It can mount and run a CRT file containing the disk image of a Commodore 64. This file format is classified as Disk Image.
  3. cron (scheduled task) by cron Developers
cron is a job scheduler built into UNIX-like platforms. A crontab (cron table) containing a scheduled task can be saved as a CRT file. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: CronHowto
  4. GlobalSign (security certificate) by GlobalSign
GlobalSign is a digital certificate/key automation provider and management service. It distributes public key certificates as CRT files. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: Apache: Install SSL, Cisco ASA: Install SSL
  5. Oracle Database (terminal settings) by Oracle
Oracle Database is a multi-model database management system with SQL, NoSQL, and object storage support. Its terminal settings are saved in a CRT file. This file format is classified as Settings.
  6. Soft Concert (karaoke) by Soft Convert
Soft Concert is a discontinued karaoke music player. It uses karaoke clips saved in files with CRT filename extension. This file format is classified as Audio.

CRT file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the CRT files produces the following result:

CRT is a very widely used file extension. The file type uses a standardized format supported by many programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

All the rest of the CRT files (14%) have different formats, frequently e.g. X.509v3 security certificate, Security Certificate, C64 Cartridge image, LINEAR, MII and CIRCULAR. Sometimes used for server, sectigorsadomain, client, usertrustrsaaaaca, authority or star. If you want to find out what your CRT file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a crt security certificate is a special file format by OpenSSL and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with CRT files

  • Associate the CRT file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open security certificates. Because only the current version supports the latest CRT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the OpenSSL manufacturer website after an available OpenSSL update.
  • To make sure that your CRT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .CRT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
