What is a DCR file?

DCR files mostly belong to Delphi by Embarcadero. DCR is a filename extension for videos captured using Digital Court Recorder, a media software for recording court proceedings. A DCR video file contains multi-channel video and audio, notes, transcriptions, and metadata of court proceedings stored in a media container format that is playable with DCR Player. Liberty Recording, a cross-platform software widely used for recording council meetings, legal proceedings, and police interview uses a different DCR video format to save video files. DCR extension is also associated with a RAW image format used to capture images on Kodak digital cameras such as DSC Pro 14nx. Delphi, an integrated development environment for creating programs stores component resource data such as palettes and icons as bitmap images in DCR files. Director, a discontinued program for authoring shockwave content stored interactive media content such as games and videos in DCR files.

How to open DCR files

You need a suitable software like Delphi to open a DCR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DCR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DCR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DCR files:

  1. Delphi by Embarcadero
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DCR files are often referred to as Delphi developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. AstroVIEW X (data log) by AstroNova
AstroVIEW X is a discontinued data review and analysis software for viewing and converting data collected from AstroNova test equipment. Such data logs are stored in DCR files. AstroVIEW X also featured built-in tools for converting DCR data logs to ASCII, XLS and other formats. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Digital Court Recording (video recording) by BIS
Digital Court Recorder is a media recording software with support for high-quality, multi-channel audio/video recording, conferencing, and playback of court proceedings. The program saves video recordings of court proceedings in DCR files. This file format is classified as Video.
  4. Kodak Digital Camera (captured image) by Kodak
Photoshop is a cross-platform raster graphics editor with a range of tools for enhancing, retouching, and designing images, brochures, and posters. The program supports various image formats including minimally compressed DCR images captured with Kodak digital cameras. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
  5. Liberty Court Recorder (video recording) by High Criteria
Liberty Court Recorder is a digital video/audio recording software used to document court proceedings. The program supports multi-channel audio/video recording for isolated audio playback, noise reduction, bookmarking, remote data storage and IP cameras. Videos captured with Liberty Court Recorder are stored in DCR files. This file format is classified as Video.
  6. Shockwave (movie) by Adobe
Shockwave is a discontinued media platform used to play interactive media content such as games and movies in NPAPI-compatible browsers. Shockwave movies created with Director were stored in DCR files. This file format is classified as Video.

DCR file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the DCR files:

You will often come across the DCR file type. This includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 25% of all DCR files are different files with different signatures, the following 4 formats exist: HGCRLCRS. They are often associated with nypd, istung or interview. Just click the "Choose your .dcr file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your DCR file is.

a dcr component resource is a special file format by Embarcadero and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with DCR files

  • Associate the DCR file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open component resources. Because only the current version supports the latest DCR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Embarcadero manufacturer website after an available Delphi update.
  • To make sure that your DCR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DCR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
