All about DCR Files
The DCR file type is primarily associated with Delphi.
What is a DCR file?
How to open DCR files
You need a suitable software like Delphi to open a DCR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DCR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DCR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DCR file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the DCR files:
You will often come across the DCR file type. This includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 45% of all DCR files are associated with Director - Shockwave movie. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 42 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MDGFrevF, PMBA, XFIR, rdcF and cb`y9sM. Examples of file names are Game.dcr. Such files sometimes refer to shockwave, bbook, battle, burnin, rubber, agame, creep, field, ready, heat and lose.
- 30% of all DCR files are Director - Shockwave movie files, which are using the popular RIFX file format. The RIFX format is an eXtended RIFF format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The average file size is 180 KB with most files being between 18 KB and 740 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as RIFX, ABMP, FGDMFver, Fcdr, BUfANf, Br~nAQjqqf~, obrQ~njJf and /RbX. Files like these are sometimes connected to fliporflop, problem, transplant, dnafingerprinting and analys.
The remaining 25% of all DCR files are different files with different signatures, the following 4 formats exist: HGCRLCRS. They are often associated with nypd, istung or interview. Just click the "Choose your .dcr file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your DCR file is.

a dcr component resource is a special file format by Embarcadero and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DCR files
- Associate the DCR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open component resources. Because only the current version supports the latest DCR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Embarcadero manufacturer website after an available Delphi update.
- To make sure that your DCR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DCR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
