All about DES Files
The DES file type is primarily associated with CorelDRAW.
What is a DES file?
How to open DES files
You need a suitable software like CorelDRAW to open a DES file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DES file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DES file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DES file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DES files:
The DES file type includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all DES files use the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 170 KB to 7 MB in size, with a median of 550 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. Some examples of file names are GameGuard.des or GameMon.des. Files like these are sometimes connected to ggerror.
- 8% of all DES files are based on the zip format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one DES file. 6 to 18 compressed files with names like links.xml, mimetype, \META-INF\container.xml, \META-INF\links.xml, \META-INF\metadata.xml, \META-INF\textinfo.xml, \color\color.xml, \color\docPalette.xml, \color\profiles\, \color\profiles\rgb\srgb color space profile.icm, \content\dataFileList.dat, \content\data\data1.dat, \content\data\masterPage.dat, \content\data\page1.dat, \content\root.dat, \metadata\metadata.xml, \metadata\textinfo.xml and \styles\ are common. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The file size is in the range of 200 KB to 5 MB. The files contain the following words: content, mimetypeapplication/x-vnd.corel.zcf.designer.document+zipPK and data. These files are often associated with backup.
The remaining 77% of all DES files are different files with different signatures, the following 7 formats can be found: Pro/Desktop Design, Corel DESIGN graphics and WAGE. Sometimes used for invoice, hprice, vote, intuit or ksubs. If you want to find out what your DES file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with DES files
- Associate the DES file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open technical illustrations. Because only the current version supports the latest DES file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Corel manufacturer website after an available CorelDRAW update.
- To make sure that your DES file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DES file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
