All about DIB Files
The DIB file type is primarily associated with Photos.
What is a DIB file?
How do you open DIB files?
You need a suitable software like Photos to open a DIB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DIB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DIB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DIB files are often referred to as Photos raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Bio-Formats (medical image) by OMEBio-Formats is a Java library for viewing images saved in raster file formats that are mainly used in the life sciences. Microscopy images saved in DIB format can be opened with this tool. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- IrfanView (image) by Irfan ŠkiljanIrfanView is a lightweight image viewer and editor for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems. It can be used to open and edit DIB image files. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
- Photoshop (image) by AdobePhotoshop is a raster image editing software for Windows, Mac, and smartphones. It may be used to save, edit, or open DIB, BMP, and many other raster image file formats. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
DIB file format:
To view or edit DIB files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the DIB files:
The DIB file extension is rarely used and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all DIB files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "BM" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 280 KB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today.
- 15% of all DIB files have the same signature 28 00 00 00. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. DIB files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 56 KB - 1 MB. Some examples of file names are 00733-actin.DIB. These files are often associated with actin.
The remaining 55% of all DIB files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. SQL, JFIF, PNG and SZDD. Just click the "Choose your .dib file to view this image" button on this page to find out what your DIB file is.

a dib image is a special file format by Mircorost and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with DIB files
- Associate the DIB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open images. Because only the current version supports the latest DIB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Mircorost manufacturer website after an available Photos update.
- To make sure that your DIB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DIB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
