What is a DIVX file?

DIVX files mostly belong to DivX by DivX. DIVX filename extension is associated with videos stored in DivX Media Format. A DIVX file contains high-compression video streams encoded using DivX codec which is based on MPEG-4 video compression standard. Contents of DIVX files can also include multiple video streams, subtitles (XSUB), chapters, metadata (XTAG). The container format used by DIVX files is also partly extended from the AVI format which allows composers to include audio and subtitle data by storing the data in RIFF headers. The high-compression codec used to encode DIVX videos files ensures minimal quality loss and allows video resolutions of up to 1080 HD. Users may play DIVX videos using DivX Player or a third-party media player such as VLC.

How to open DIVX files

You need a suitable software like DivX to open a DIVX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DIVX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DIVX file directly in the browser:.
