The DMP file type is primarily associated with Windows.
What is a DMP file?
How to open DMP files
You need a suitable software like Windows to open a DMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DMP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DMP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DMP file extension format:
To view or edit DMP files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the DMP files is as follows:
The DMP extension is very commonly used. This DMP file itself is among the most popular common file types and uses a uniform format that many programs support. The file formats most commonly found in DMP files are:
- 65% of all DMP files are Windows Minidump files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 110 KB to 180 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The following keywords are characteristic: MDMP. These files can be linked to dump, crash, minidump, svchost, chrome, cubase, game and crashdump.
- 20% of all DMP files are associated with Windows 64bit Memory Dump. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 260 KB to 650 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PAGEDU64 and PAGEPAGEPAGE. A usual file name is MEMORY.DMP. Such files sometimes refer to mini, watchdog, chall and whea.
All other DMP files (15%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. EXE, ELF, EXPORT, PGDMP, Darpa and TAPE. Sometimes used for live, server, data, explorer, client or host. If you want to find out which format your DMP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .dmp file to analyze".

How to solve problems with DMP files
- Associate the DMP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open system crash dumps. Because only the current version supports the latest DMP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows update.
- To make sure that your DMP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .DMP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
