What is a DMP file?

DMP files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. A DMP file is a memory or crash dump generated when Windows operating system crashes during operation. The crash information is saved to the %SystemRoot%\Memory.dmp folder of the system's primary disk. Some information in such a DMP file is displayed on the BSoD screen. DMP is also the filename extension of a Linux memory dump. SQL Server, Oracle Database, and PostgreSQL database management systems use different DMP file formats to save database dumps. How to open DMP files

You need a suitable software like Windows to open a DMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. 20% of all DMP files are associated with Windows 64bit Memory Dump. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 260 KB to 650 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PAGEDU64 and PAGEPAGEPAGE. A usual file name is MEMORY.DMP. Such files sometimes refer to mini, watchdog, chall and whea.
