All about DOX Files

The DOX file type is primarily associated with Doxygen.

DOXFile Extension DOX
File extension: DOX
File type:  documentation markup

What is a DOX file

DOX files mostly belong to Doxygen by Doxygen Team. A DOX file contains markup which Doxygen uses to generate documentation for an app, library, or framework written in C or C++. Documentation generated with such DOX files are usually saved in HTML format. Any plain text editor may be used to open and edit this file. Another type of DOX file is a document containing graphical elements which cannot be saved as text in a Windows executable project created with ActiveX framework. Such a document is saved alongside DOB, FRM, and FRX files in the same project in a Visual Basic environment.

How do you open DOX files?

You need a suitable software like Doxygen to open a DOX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DOX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DOX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DOX format details:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the DOX files is as follows:

DOX is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:

All other DOX files (35%) have no consistent format. Sometimes used for script. You can get all the details of your DOX file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .dox file to view" above.

How to solve problems with DOX files

  • Associate the DOX file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open documentation markups. Because only the current version supports the latest DOX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Doxygen Team manufacturer website after an available Doxygen update.
  • To make sure that your DOX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
