What is a DWG file

DWG files mostly belong to AutoCAD by Autodesk. DWG is the filename extension of a 2D or 3D drawing/design saved in the Drawing (DWG) format originally developed by Mike Riddle and later, Autodesk. A DWG file stores drawings as vector images saved alongside metadata. The format is also used to store a drawing template (DWT), a drawing backup, temporary drawing saves (SV$), and drawing standards (DWS). Although DWG is mainly used to store drawings created with AutoCAD, it is also the native computer-aided design format of BricsCAD, Caddle, and IntelliCAD. Third-party programs such as CorelCAD , TurboCAD, and Canvas support DWG format.

How to open DWG files

You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open a DWG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DWG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DWG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert DWG files:

  1. AutoCAD by Autodesk
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. DWG files are often referred to as AutoCAD cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. BravoDRAFT
BravoDRAFT is a discontinued computer-aided design program. It stored drawings in a DWG file that isn't the same format as drawings created with AutoCAD. Related links: EDS PLM Solutions
  3. CAD file by CST CAD Navigator
Enables to open and convert different 2D/3D files, get their dimensions and create section views. The software is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  4. Creo (drawing) by PTC
Creo is a computer-aided 3D product design/modeling and manufacturing software. It can store, import, and edit 3D drawings saved in DWG format. This file format is classified as CAD.
  5. Drafix (drawing) by Drafix Developers
Drafix is a discontinued computer-aided design software for desktop platforms. It used a DWG file to store drawings. This file format is classified as CAD.

DWG format details:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the DWG files:

The DWG extension is very commonly found and mainly uses a defined DWG format. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 4% of all DWG files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. DOC. The category is plans, acad, detail, first, house or block. Just click the "Choose your .dwg file to view" button on this page to find out what your DWG file is.

a dwg drawing is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with DWG files

  • Associate the DWG file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open drawings. Because only the current version supports the latest DWG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available AutoCAD update.
  • To make sure that your DWG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DWG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
