What is a DWG file

DWG files mostly belong to AutoCAD by Autodesk. DWG is the filename extension of a 2D or 3D drawing/design saved in the Drawing (DWG) format originally developed by Mike Riddle and later, Autodesk. A DWG file stores drawings as vector images saved alongside metadata. The format is also used to store a drawing template (DWT), a drawing backup, temporary drawing saves (SV$), and drawing standards (DWS). Although DWG is mainly used to store drawings created with AutoCAD, it is also the native computer-aided design format of BricsCAD, Caddle, and IntelliCAD. Third-party programs such as CorelCAD , TurboCAD, and Canvas support DWG format.

How to open DWG files

You need a suitable software like AutoCAD to open a DWG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DWG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DWG file directly in the browser:. The DWG extension is very commonly found and mainly uses a defined DWG format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 95% of all DWG files are AutoCAD R2 files. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 700 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. These files can be linked to plan, floor, layout, drawing, sheet, ground, site and level.
• 1% of all DWG files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 200 bytes in size and range from 190 bytes to 210 bytes. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8">, <fullname></fullname>, <whprops>, datetime, machinename and username.
