Opening an EFX File
The EFX file type is primarily associated with eFax.
What is an EFX file
- Main Use: eFax is a service-based program that allows for faxes to be sent and received over the world wide web. This is done by transmitting faxes as email attachments. The EFX files contain email attachments and email body text. eFax Messenger software can be used to convert the EFX files into PDF or TIF file format. eFax EFX documents can be converted into other popular formats such as DOC, JPG, XLS, and HTML.
- Other Uses: EFX file extension is also used to save game files used in Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy game developed by Raven Software. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a video game where the player can choose to follow the light or dark side. The EFX file consists of data that contains the description of various effects present in the game. The effects in the EFX files include events such as clashing of lightsabers, lightsaber hitting an in-game character, or a lightsaber colliding with an object. More effects such as explosions are also stored in EFX files. It is possible to edit the EFX files to customize the effects in the game as well. EFX file type is also associated with the Quake 3 computer game which uses the files to store effect related data utilized in game-play.

EFX file format:
To view or edit EFX files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the EFX files:
The EFX file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The following file formats are most commonly found in EFX files:
- 70% of all EFX files belong to eFax Document. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 12 KB to 220 KB in size, with a median of 46 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The files contain the following words: Unix eFxTool 1.1 and j2 Global Communications. Files like these are sometimes connected to contract and signed.
- 15% of all EFX files start with the magic bytes 03 EB 03 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 760 bytes to 3 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB.
All the rest of the EFX files (15%) have different formats, such as EFX. If you want to find out which format your EFX file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .efx file to view this image".
