What is an F file?

F files mostly belong to Notepad++ by Don Ho. The F file extension usually refers to the text files that have the source codes for the FORTRAN computer programming language. FORTRAN is a general-purpose, procedural programming language commonly used for general numeric and scientific computation purposes. The source code stored in F files needs to be encoded and compiled as per the specifications of the FORTRAN programming language.

Use: The data contained in the F File (source codes and other application details) are fed into a pre-processor software and the processed source code is then sent to the FORTRAN compiler. The FORTRAN source codes are written in the text format and as such the normal text editing software solutions on Windows and Mac operating systems can be used to view and edit F files.
Other uses: The F extension file is also associated with the Unix archive file compressed with the Freeze program. This format is related to an old compression format used by the QNX4 operating systems. The compression algorithm contained in the file is a modified LZSS (Lempel–Ziv–Storer–Szymanski) algorithm, with adaptive Huffman coding.

How to open an F file

You need a suitable software like Notepad++ to open an F file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
