Opening an FLI File
The FLI file type is primarily associated with Autodesk Animator Pro.
What is an FLI file?
FLI files are used mainly for animations created with Autodesk Animator Pro. They hold a series of image frames that are stored using techniques like delta frame compression, where only the changes between frames are recorded to keep file sizes small.
This format is recognized for its effectiveness in these areas:
- Autodesk Animator Pro Animation: The primary use of a FLI file is to store animated sequences. More details can be found on the Autodesk site.
- Compressed Image File: Some FLI files use compression methods, which makes them efficient for animation playback. Additional explanations are available at Compuphase.
- Firmware Load Image: In a few cases, the extension is applied to firmware load images.
- Bamboo Paper File: Occasionally, FLI files refer to data associated with Bamboo Paper; see Bamboo Paper for more information.
FilExt.com note: Designs for legacy animation software like Autodesk Animator Pro and Autodesk 3ds Max have often employed this format. Its use of frame differencing was a pioneering approach in early digital animation, making FLI files a noteworthy part of animation history.
How do you open FLI files?
You need a suitable software like Autodesk Animator Pro to open an FLI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FLI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FLI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FLI file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the FLI files:
The FLI file extension is not widely used. Such a file covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in FLI files:
- 30% of all FLI files have no uniform signature. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 16 KB to 1 MB in size, with a median of 220 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 20 years ago.
- 30% of all FLI files start with the magic bytes ªUªU, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 27 KB to 3 MB in size. A common filename is LOGO.FLI or SWL.FLI. Such files sometimes refer to infolog, hwinfo and system.
All other FLI files (40%) have no consistent format. If you want to find out what your FLI file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with FLI files
- Associate the FLI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open animation files. Because only the current version supports the latest FLI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Autodesk Animator Pro update.
- To make sure that your FLI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FLI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
