The FTW file type is primarily associated with Family Tree Maker.
What is an FTW file?

FTW file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the FTW files looks like this:
The FTW file extension is used very often and mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 97% of all FTW files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 00025700-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00000257-0000-0000-0000-000000000000. The file contains sections AUX.DB, BIRTH.NDX, IND.DB, NAME.NDX, CHUNK00000, INDGROUPS, CHUNK00001, CHUNK00002, CHUNK00003, GENERAL.DB, CHUNK00004, QUICKEDIT.DB, F018000000000.FIN, F030000000000.FIN, F008000000000.FIN, SOURCE.NDX and HistoryList. Most of these files are 450 KB to 27 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. Files like these have the following tags: family, tree, history, backup, trachtenberg, descendants, ancestors, genealogy, tyrnauer, ford and lenz, and contain person-related data.
- 2% of all FTW files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "FTW" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 7 KB to 11 KB in size, with a median of 9 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as FontTwister and www.neuber.com 1998. Some examples of file names are Cesar.ftw.
All the rest of the FTW files (1%) have different formats. Just click the "Choose your .ftw file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your FTW file is.
