What is a GEM file?

GEM files mostly belong to RubyGems by Chad Fowler, Jim Weirich, David Alan Black, Paul Brannan and Richard Kilmer. GEM is the filename extension of archive files containing programming frameworks or libraries downloaded with RubyGems package manager for Ruby programming language. This type of GEM file is called a "Gem" and it consists of Ruby code (RB files), the gem's documentation (README file), the Gem's specification (GEMSPEC), as well as a Rakefile. GEM is also the filename extension of virus patterns and updates files used by McAfee antivirus software. GEM filename extension is further associated with vector drawings saved in GEM Metafile format. The native file format for saving vector drawings created with GEM Draw vector graphics editor uses GEM filename extension. A GEM drawing begins with a 24-word header followed by the file's body which is composed of drawing commands.

How to open GEM files

You need a suitable software like RubyGems to open a GEM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GEM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GEM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GEM file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the GEM files:

The GEM file extension is very common and includes various formats for various programs. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 30% of all GEM files are files with no common format, the following 10 formats can be found: GEM metafile, McAfee AV Pattern update, ZIP, GemDataFile and GEMPAK. These files sometimes refer to system, level, ccna, brightarmor, joffrey, taghziye, basics, signal, bredo, intro, sound or start. If you want to find out which format your GEM file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .gem file to view this image".
