Opening an IFF File
The IFF file type is primarily associated with AmigaOS.
What is an IFF file?
They work as a container for different types of information. Some common uses are:
Each IFF file divides its content into chunks. Every chunk has a header and a body, which separates data clearly. This method helps add or modify parts of the file without reworking the whole file.
FilExt.com note: For viewing or editing an IFF file, use the software or tools provided by the system or game. Sometimes an archive tool that handles ZIP compression is needed if the file is compressed.
How to open an IFF file
You need a suitable software like AmigaOS to open an IFF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IFF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IFF file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IFF format details:
To view or edit IFF files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the IFF files:
An IFF file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in IFF files:
- 55% of all IFF files are associated with Maya IFF bitmap. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are 7 KB to 580 KB in size, with a median of 25 KB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. The keywords FORM, CMAP, ILBMBMHD, BODY and CAMG are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to frontend, jwst, frut, grab, imjg, logo, spli and 3D model.
- 15% of all IFF files have the same signature 94 EF 3B FF. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 2 KB to 17 MB. Examples of file names are tunedata.iff. These files are often associated with shoe.
All the rest of the IFF files (30%) have different formats, often e.g. "The Sims" object and ZIP. Often described as face, roster, user, newscorebug, generate or global. You can get all the details of your IFF file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .iff file to view this image" above.

an iff container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IFF files
- Associate the IFF file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest IFF file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available AmigaOS update.
- To make sure that your IFF file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IFF file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
