Opening an IFO File

The IFO file type is primarily associated with Media Player.

IFOFile Extension IFO
File extension: IFO
File type:  DVD information

What is an IFO file?

IFO files mostly belong to Media Player by Microsoft. IFO files typically contain information used to navigate and play the videos in a DVD disc. As such IFO files are often called DVD information files. Contents of IFO files include information about the location of audio/video tracks, subtitles, chapters, titles, menus etc. DVD information (IFO) files also summarize the attributes of media sources (audio, video, and subpicture streams). By opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO one can play all videos stored in a DVD. IFO filename extension is also associated with module information files of games developed with Aurora Engine (a game development platform). Module information files in Aurora Engine are named module.ifo and saved within Encapsulated Resource Files (ERF) such as NVM, MOD, or SAV modules. ROSE, a roleplaying online game saves maps in IFO files. ANNO 2070, a real-time strategy video game saves configuration data in IFO files. Such IFO files are stored in an RDA game data archive.

How to open IFO files

You need a suitable software like Media Player to open an IFO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your IFO file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a IFO file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

IFO format details:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the IFO files is as follows:

IFO is a very common file type and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in IFO files:

All other IFO files (4%) have no consistent format. Just click the "Choose your .ifo file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your IFO file is.
