If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the IMG files comes to the following conclusion:
IMG is a very common file type and includes very many different file formats. The file formats most commonly found in IMG files are:
- 8% of all IMG files are using the well-known JPG file format to store the data. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. IMG files can be up to 7 MB in size, but are often around 25 KB - 3 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as JFIF. These files are often associated with lmpw, mjaymda, jlzw, nvbs, xziw, nynjtudf, njmxote and msnty.
- 7% of all IMG files start with the bytes ×·« crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 8 MB in size and range from 290 KB to 25 MB. Examples of file names are dtbo.img. Files like these have the following tags: micc.
All other IMG files (85%) have different formats, the following 40 formats can be found: Android boot image, Grand Theft Auto, Garmin basemap, Android Generic System Image, GEM bitmap, Mediatek Android ROM Image, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 game data archive, TIFF, PNG, GZIP, GIF, EXE, ELF, RESET, EHFA and OSP. an img disk image is a special file format by Apple and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with IMG files
- Associate the IMG file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest IMG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apple manufacturer website after an available Disk Utility update.
- To make sure that your IMG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .IMG file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
