Opening an INS File
The INS file type is primarily associated with InstallShield.
What is an INS file?
Other INS files are formatted in UTF-16 (LE) and serve as Windows installer files for setups such as Internet Explorer; these files store setup information that the installer reads at runtime.
Additionally, there are INS files that hold instrument patch names for audio programs like Cakewalk Sonar; these files list names and sound data used in musical setups.
Finally, some INS files are created as compressed archives through tools like 7-Zip. These archives, sometimes labeled as installer packages (for example, the Talend Installer archive), bundle files together in a compressed format.
Review the file by opening it with a text editor or with the corresponding installation, audio, or compression tool. Use the appropriate application based on clues from the file content.

Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your INS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a INS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

INS file format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the INS files produces the following result:
INS is seldom used as a file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The file formats most commonly found in INS files are:
- 20% of all INS files are associated with InstallShield Script. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 57 KB to 270 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. InstallSHIELD Software Coporation (c) 1990-1997, SRCDIR, SRCDISK and TARGETDISK. A common filename is SETUP.INS.
- 10% of all INS files internally utilize the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 450 bytes to 700 bytes. The files contain the following words: Version, Wizard_Version, [Branding] and CompanyName=Microsoft Corporation. A common filename is install.ins.
All other INS files (70%) have no uniform format. Sometimes used for elsarticle or instrument. If you want to find out which format your INS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ins file to analyze".

How to solve problems with INS files
- Associate the INS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open installer scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest INS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available InstallShield update.
- To make sure that your INS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .INS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
