What is a JAVA file

JAVA files mostly belong to JDK by Oracle. A JAVA file contains source code written in Java programming language. It usually contains a class, its methods, and properties. JAVA files are written in plain text using integrated development environments such as Eclipse and compiled to a CLASS executable using the JAVAC compiler bundled with Java Development Kit. CLASS files compiled from JAVA files may be executed by Java Virtual Machine on different platforms. A JAVA file that prints "Hello, World!" to the console when executed will look as follows:

class HelloWorld
public static void main(String args[])
System.out.println("Hello, World!");

How to open JAVA files

You need a suitable software like JDK to open a JAVA file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JAVA file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JAVA file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert JAVA files:

  1. JDK by Oracle
    See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. JAVA files are often referred to as JDK developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Eclipse (source code) by Eclipse Foundation
    Eclipse is an integrated development environment with support for multiple programming languages. It can create and edit source code saved in a JAVA file. This file format is classified as Developer.
  3. NetBeans (source code) by Oracle
    NetBeans is an integrated development environment for building Java applications. It saves Java source code in a plain text JAVA file. This file format is classified as Developer.

JAVA file format:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the JAVA files:

The JAVA extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in JAVA files:

The remaining 22% of all JAVA files are different files with different signatures. The category is demo, client, catch, error, hello, manager, product, action, array, class, token, base, impl or list. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your JAVA file!

a java source code is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with JAVA files

  • Associate the JAVA file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open source codes. Because only the current version supports the latest JAVA file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available JDK update.
  • To make sure that your JAVA file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .JAVA file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
