What is a JPEG file?

JPEG files mostly belong to Photos by Microsoft. A JPEG file is a raster image container for bitmap graphics captured with a digital camera, scanner, or exported from an image processing software. JPEG images files are encoded using the Joint Photographic Experts Group's (JPEG) compression scheme, a discrete cosine transform (DCT) lossy image compression standard which provides up to 10:1 image compression with minimal loss of quality. While this compression standard is associated with various image file formats, images compressed with JPEG typically have JPG or JPEG filename extension. Having such high compression also makes images saved in JPEG format unsuitable for editing due to loss of quality. Images with resolutions up to 65,535 x 65,535 pixels can be saved a JPEG file. The file may also contain information about the chroma and metadata of the image. Most image viewers can be used to open JPEG files.

How to open a JPEG file

You need a suitable software like Photos to open a JPEG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JPEG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JPEG file directly in the browser:. JPEG file format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the JPEG files:

JPEG is one of the most common file extensions and uses a uniform format that many programs support. But the following two file formats are common:

85% of all JPEG files are JPEG bitmap files, which are using the popular JPG file format. JPEG is the standard image format for lossy and compressed image data. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. JPEG files are between 15 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as JFIF and Exif. These files can be linked to image, received, images, photo, download, screenshot, resized, data and temp.
1% of all JPEG files are using the well-known PNG file format to store the data. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 160 KB in size and range from 15 KB to 990 KB. The keywords IHDR and IDATx are typical for these files. A common filename is PurpleThing.jpeg.

All other JPEG files (14%) have no consistent format, the following 14 formats can be found: RIFF, GIF, Mac2OSX, ZIP, PDF, TIFF, PSD, HTML, JSON and JFIF. Files like these are sometimes linked to logo, scan, user, scoped, upload or msgr.
