Opening a JS File
The JS file type is primarily associated with Visual Studio Code.
What is a JS file
How can I open a JS file?
You need a suitable software like Visual Studio Code to open a JS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your JS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a JS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert JS files:
- Visual Studio Code by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. JS files are often referred to as Visual Studio Code developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Firefox (settings) by MozillaFirefox is a free Internet browser for desktop and mobile devices. Apart from rendering scripts saved in JS files, Firefox also uses settings saved in a prefs.js file. This file format is classified as Settings.
- JetScript (print job) by JetScript DeveloperJetScript is a print utility and PostScript-based page description language used by older printers. It uses a JS file to save a print job. This file contains all formatting data and instructions of a print job. This file format is classified as Data.
- Node (script) by OpenJS FoundationNode is a JavaScript runtime based on Chrome's V8 engine. This program allows JS (JavaScript) code to be executed outside the browser. This file format is classified as Developer.
JS file extension format:
To find out what program is needed to open JS files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the JS files:
JS is a very widely used file extension. The file type contains well-defined data in an established structure that can be read by various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all JS files save the data in Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 54 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 300 KB. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: jQuery, function, license and Copyright. Files like these have the following tags: jquery, bootstrap, mraid, channel, bundle, prefs, data, plugin and tables.
- 4% of all JS files use the same file format, which have the signature window. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 6 KB in size and range from 39 bytes to 4 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as window, part0 and twitter. The file name direct-messages.js or tweet.js is typical for these files. These files are often associated with direct, periscope, account, message, group, conversions, following, protected and history.
The remaining 31% of all JS files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. HTML, JSON, UTF-16 (LE), Mac2OSX, use, window, define, module, let, document and script. The category is user, direct, controller, content, core, history or message. If you want to find out what your JS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a js script is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with JS files
- Associate the JS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest JS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Visual Studio Code update.
- To make sure that your JS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .JS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
