What is an LDIF file?

LDIF files mostly belong to Thunderbird by Mozilla. The LDIF file format is a standard plain text data interchange format. The Data Interchange Formats are usually used to specify contents of a directory such as the record of objects or entries. The LDIF format is used concerning Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), which is a software protocol used to determine the location of files/folders, devices and other things on the TCP/IP network.

Main Usage: This plain text file stores directory data as a set of record where each record is associated with an entry made in the directory. These records also describe the modification requests made by the users such as Add, Modify, Rename or Delete. Each record has a set of attributes and there are blank lines to separate one record from the other. Thus, in a way these LDIF files provide a simple mechanism of communicating with the directory.

How can I open an LDIF file?

60% of all LDIF files are LDAP Data Interchange Format files. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 620 bytes to 370 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. objectclass: top, mail, mozillaAbPersonAlpha, objectclass: person, objectclass: inetOrgPerson and objectclass: organizationalPerson. A common filename is test-server.ldif. These files are often associated with address, book, addresses, contacts, ldap, server, adressen, backup, export and data.
15% of all LDIF files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "version: 1" at the beginning. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. LDIF files can be up to 39 MB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 37 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. version: 1, objectClass: top, objectClass: domain, pkddownload and objectClass: country. Files like these have the following tags: icaopkd and dsccrl.
