What is an M4V file?

M4V files mostly belong to iTunes by Apple. Files with M4V filename extension are (usually DRM-protected) MPEG-4 videos downloaded from iTunes Store. An M4V file contains multiple audio and video streams whose length can range from 3-minute music videos to full-length movies. M4V files may also contain subtitles, images, and Rich Media or BIFS (Binary Format for Scenes) which render interactive 2D/3D graphics (like DVD menus). M4V files are similar to MP4 but the Digital Rights Management protection used to encode M4V files prevents unauthorized playback. This means an M4V file can only be played on a computer that has been authorized to use the iTunes account used to purchase the video. M4V files use video/x-m4v Internet media type. Unprotected M4V files are playable with third-party software such as Media Player, VLC etc.

How to open an M4V file

You need a suitable software like iTunes to open an M4V file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your M4V file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a M4V file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

M4V file format:

To view or edit M4V files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the M4V files:

You will often come across the M4V file type. This is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

All other M4V files (15%) have no consistent format. The category is tigger or woman. If you want to find out what your M4V file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
