Opening a MAC File

The MAC file type is primarily associated with Dynamics GP.

MACFile Extension MAC
File extension: MAC
File type:  macro

What is a MAC file?

MAC files mostly belong to Dynamics GP by Microsoft. A MAC file usually contains a macro created by computer programming tools or task automation software. A MAC (macro) file contains a sequence of computer commands and functions used to automate repetitive tasks such as updating locally stored information, sending data to a remote API, performing complex calculations, generating graphics templates etc. These MAC files are usually executed by the program used to create them. Some programs capable of creating MAC macro files include Dynamics GP, Cakewalk, UltraEdit, Cabri II Plus and Minitab. MAC is also the filename extension of 720 by 576 pixels black and white bitmaps files used to store illustrations created with MacPaint, an older digital painting software for Macintosh computers. Although MacPaint is no longer on sale, programs such as PaintShop and QuickTime can be used to open MAC images. DAQARTA, an FFT spectrum analysis software saves extended audio data in MAC files.

How to open a MAC file

You need a suitable software like Dynamics GP to open a MAC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MAC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MAC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to convert MAC files to EXE, BAT, BIN, VBS, JS, ...

You can convert MAC files using our online MAC file viewer (powered by Convert.Guru):
  1. To do this, click the button "Choose your .mac file to view this image" on this page.
  2. Your MAC file will then be displayed in the browser.
  3. Now click on "Save as..." at the top of the page.
  4. Then select the file format (e.g. EXE, BAT, BIN, VBS, JS, ...) you want.
  5. Download the converted file.

Programs that open and convert MAC files:

  1. Dynamics GP by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MAC files are often referred to as Dynamics GP executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Access (shortcut) by Microsoft
Access is a database management software built upon the JET relational database engine and a modern graphical interface that allows users to easily build and manage various business and personal applications. MAC files served as shortcuts for accessing database objects in older versions of Access. This file format is classified as Data.
  3. Cabri II Plus (macro) by Cabrilog
Cabri II Plus is a dynamic math and geometry software used to create numerical and geometric constructions. Macros created with Cabri II Plus are saved in text files that have MAC filename extension. This file format is classified as Executable.
  4. Daqarta (extended audio data) by Interstellar Research
Daqarta is a Windows-based software that uses a computer's sound to provide high performance waveform and FFT spectrum analysis, color spectrograms, signal averaging, and signal generation with advanced options for lab or personal use. Extended audio data used by Daqarta is stored in a MAC file. This file format is classified as Audio.
  5. MacPaint (bitmap) by Apple
MacPaint is one of the earliest raster graphics editor created for the Macintosh. It saved illustrations as black and white bitmaps images which are compatible with various image processing software. These images were stored in MAC files. MacPaint has been discontinued. This file format is classified as Raster Image. Related links: XnView
  6. MINITAB (macro) by Minitab
Minitab is a statistical analysis software with tools for making predictions and visualizing data collected from various sources. Repetitive tasks done in Minitab can be automated by creating macros (MAC files) that are scheduled to run at specific intervals or when an event is detected by defined triggers. This file format is classified as Executable.
  7. PaintShop (bitmap) by Corel
PaintShop is a raster graphics editor with an extensive toolkit for retouching photos and creating digital paintings (and illustrations). It can open MAC images and other graphics file types. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
  8. PDP-10 (MACRO-10 Assembler Compiler Source) by DEC
The PDP-10 was a mainframe computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the late 1960s. Program source code passed to its MACRO-10 Assembler's compiler were stored in MAC files. The compiler outputs REL files. This file format is classified as Developer.
  9. QuickTime (bitmap) by Apple
QuickTime is a versatile multimedia player with audio/video playback, streaming, and conversion support. It can also be used to view video animations, panoramic images, and slideshows. Images stored in MAC format can be viewed with QuickTime. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
  10. TASM (macro) by Micro Focus
TASM (short for Turbo Assembler) was a software development program used alongside C++ compilers on classic DOS platforms. Macros used to automate some TASM operations were saved in MAC files. This program appears to have been discontinued. This file format is classified as Executable.
  11. Xcode (executable) by Apple
Xcode is an integrated development environment for building apps and programs for Apple platforms such as iOS, watchOS, and iPadOS. Mac-O binaries used on these platforms are stored in MAC files. This file format is classified as Executable. Related links: Mac-O

MAC file format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MAC files:

The MAC file type covers a large number of different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in MAC files:

All the rest of the MAC files (90%) have different formats, such as MegaCAD Macro, UTF-16 (LE), Macro and DEXVERSION. Files like these are sometimes linked to link, export, macro, radio, shell, corp or dash. You can get all the details of your MAC file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mac file to view this image" above.

a mac macro is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with MAC files

  • Associate the MAC file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open macros. Because only the current version supports the latest MAC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Dynamics GP update.
  • To make sure that your MAC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .MAC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
