What is an MCW file?

MCW files mostly belong to WordPerfect. MCW files are files with a versatile role. Their purpose depends on the software that created them.

• Word Processing Documents: In many cases these files serve as a WordPerfect document or an earlier Microsoft Word 6.0 document. You can open them with applications that support older word processing formats. See details at WordPerfect.

• Compressed Archives: A few MCW files are packaged using ZIP compression. They may contain a Microsoft Word document or a mind map, which means they are stored as archives.

How to open an MCW file

MCW format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the MCW files is as follows:

MCW is not a commonly used file extension and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in MCW files:

• 55% of all MCW files are Word for the Macintosh document files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. MCW files are between 3 KB and 27 KB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago. These files are often associated with lord, article and psalm.
• 15% of all MCW files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). There is also a unique Windows component object identifier (CLSID) which is 00020906-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections with names like ComponentManager, ConfigMemory, Debugger, EditorPersist, LoadedDisplays, MainFrame, OpenFiles, ProjectMgr, ZOrder and Programmer. The files are on average 41 KB in size and range from 24 KB to 920 KB.
