Opening a MED File
The MED file type is primarily associated with MobileEdit.
What is a MED file?
- Mobile Data: Some files use a Microsoft Compound format to store mobile phone information. They are used with tools like MobileEdit which help manage mobile content.
- Game Data: Certain MED files serve as game data files for engines like Kirikiri2, holding assets or configuration details.
- Mesh & Simulation Data: A group of MED files is built on the HDF5 internal format. These contain mesh or computational fluid dynamics data used in simulation software from groups such as Salome-Meca and MEDCoupling. More information is available at this webpage.
- Multimedia Content: Some files follow the RIFF format to store audio (RIFF WAVE) or serve as legacy image files that influenced early standards. They are handled by applications like Mednafen or GoldWave (Mednafen website).
- Documents & Database Memos: Other MED files act as encrypted Open XML documents using ZIP packaging. These can tie into Microsoft Word or be seen as Microsoft Access Database Memo Files, as referenced on the Microsoft Word page.
- Other Specialized Data: Additional uses include wind turbine data for maintenance systems, Access database files, WordPerfect for DOS graphics, and Amiga music modules from OctaMED.
FilExt.com tips: To open a MED file, look at its context or properties. Identify the internal format by checking its header or metadata. Using the designated software (for example, MobileEdit for mobile data files) is the best method to view or convert these files.
How to open a MED file
You need a suitable software like MobileEdit to open a MED file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MED file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MED file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MED file extension format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the MED files is as follows:
An MED file includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in MED files are:
- 15% of all MED files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Compound files begin always with signature bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 (ÐÏࡱá). They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 8 KB to 460 KB in size. Such files sometimes refer to nokia.
- 9% of all MED files internally utilize the HDF5 file format. HDF5 is short for Hierarchical Data Format version 5. It is an open source file format for storing and organizing large amounts of data. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The average file size is 95 KB with most files being between 4 KB and 510 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. INFOS_GENERALES, ENS_MAA, OHDR and FAS}. These files are often associated with emission, sauv and mesh.
The remaining 76% of all MED files are files with no common format, the following 13 formats exist: OctaMED MMD0 module, OctaMED MMD3 module, WordPerfect, ZIP, RIFF, HBAM, MEDVERSION and GIRE. Often described as alarmas, medidas, wigtoniii, gammalt, license, data or grow. If you want to find out which format your MED file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .med file to analyze".

How to solve problems with MED files
- Associate the MED file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest MED file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MobileEdit update.
- To make sure that your MED file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MED file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
