What is a MESH file?

MESH files mostly belong to MeshLab by ISTI. MESH is an extension name for files containing 3D mesh data used by many computer-aided design software, data visualization programs, and game engines. MESH files typically contain polygons used to define the shape, surface, or geometry of a 3D model. Some 3D design tools such as MeshLab uses triangular meshes instead. This data is used to render objects, terrains, scenes, and other 3D entities in video games, animations, or models. Contents of a MESH file can be stored in text or binary format (or both). Godot Engine, a cross-platform game engine creates MESH files using both binary and text data. The MESH is created when users import OBJ (3D objects) files into Godot Engine. DirectX, a multimedia utility for rendering audio and graphics on Windows computers, stores its MESH files in binary format.

How to open MESH files

You need a suitable software like MeshLab to open a MESH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MESH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MESH file directly in the browser:. How to convert MESH files to OBJ, STL, PLY, 3DS, FBX, STP, ...

1. To do this, click the button "Choose your .mesh file to view" on this page.

MESH file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. You will often come across the MESH file type. This does not have a uniform file format. The file formats most commonly found in MESH files are:

• 15% of all MESH files start with the bytes A0 EE 04 00 crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 570 KB to 4 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. XNAaraL, Users, data, generic_item, POTKSED, mesh, XNALara and ascii--. The following filename is common: Generic_Item.mesh or t_pose.mesh. These files are attributed to generic, item and pose.
• 15% of all MESH files start with the bytes @@b@! crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 62 KB to 1 MB. The keywords [object, pdxasseti and [[[mesh are typical for these files. Such files are related to female, body, infantry, male, secular, nobility and tank.

All other MESH files (70%) have no uniform format, the following 16 formats exist: OGRE Mesh, Sky: Children of the Light compiled mesh, version, serialization, mesh, Ver, BIN, MeshVersionFormatted and CHUNK.
