What is an MHT file?

MHT files mostly belong to Edge by Microsoft. An MHT file is an HTML document with its related CSS, JS, images, audio/video clips, and other resources saved into a single document. This way of saving a web page is called MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate HTML (MHTL). The MHT file itself is just a container for all web page resources. The container's header is an email header followed by base64-encoded webpage contents with its style sheets and other resources. Browsers can save a website and its related files as a single MHT file. Word and other word processors can also create, read, and edit MHT web page documents.

How to open an MHT file

You need a suitable software like Edge to open an MHT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MHT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MHT file directly in the browser:. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Date, MIME-Version: 1.0, text, html, type, boundary, Subject, From: "Saved, Content-Type: multipart/related; and Internet Explorer. Such MHT files store data about recording, aspx, problem, google, report, xlsx, docx, search and form.
• 20% of all MHT files belong to MIME HTML archive format. The files are using the common file format MIME. MIME is short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. It is an Internet standard that extends the format of email messages to support Unicode and attachments. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. MHT files can be up to 33 MB in size, but are often around 2 KB - 4 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MIME-Version: 1.0, This, boundary, file, Content-Type: multipart/related;, NextPart, Page, text, document and html. Files like these are sometimes connected to page, dashboard, email and sales.
