Opening MK Files
The MK file type is primarily associated with GNU Make.
What is an MK file
- Makefile for Build Systems: Many projects use an .mk file as a build script for the Make utility. It lists rules, dependencies, and commands to compile software. This use is common in Unix environments and Android projects. For technical details, see the GNU Make resource.
- Matroska Multimedia Container: Some .mk files follow the Matroska format. They act like .mkv files, storing video, audio, and subtitles. Tools such as MKVToolNix can process these files. More info is available at MKVToolNix.
- Other Variants: In less frequent cases, an .mk file might appear to be a PDF document or include SQL-like formatting. These instances usually represent misnaming or nonstandard uses.
FilExt.com notes: Examine your file’s content. If it shows plain text with build instructions (often with tabs and command lines), open it with a text editor. If it contains multimedia data, try a compatible media player or, if needed, rename it to .mkv to enable playback.
How can I open an MK file?
You need a suitable software like GNU Make to open an MK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MK format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the MK files:
MK is rarely used as a file extension and has no uniform or dominant file format. The file formats most commonly found in MK files are:
- 10% of all MK files have the same signature # # . The contents of these files can even be read by a human. MK files can be up to 11 KB in size, but are often around 390 bytes - 7 KB. The keywords This, Project, Licensed under, Copyright, OpenWrt and Source are typical for these files. A usual file name is Android.mk.
- 10% of all MK files store the data in the MKV file format. MKV is short for Matroska Multimedia Container. It can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar to AVI, MP4, or ASF, but is entirely open in specification and consisting of open source software. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MK files can be up to 3 GB in size, but are often around 350 MB - 2 GB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. matroskaB. These files can be linked to downloaded movies, webrip, aashram, hindi and links.
The remaining 80% of all MK files are files with no common format, the following 4 formats exist: PDF. They are often associated with config, project or make. You can get all the details of your MK file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mk file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with MK files
- Associate the MK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open text files. Because only the current version supports the latest MK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available GNU Make update.
- To make sure that your MK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
