Opening an MPP File
The MPP file type is primarily associated with Project.
What is an MPP file?
- File structure: The file itself contains a list of tasks with milestones leading to a specific goal of a given project. Amongst the data, you can find information such as task lists, owners, dependencies, timescales, budgets, and assigned resources. It also supports visual representations in the form of Gantt charts.
- Compatible software: Other than its native program, an MPP file can be viewed via the browser-based Free Online Microsoft Project Viewer as well as other third-party solutions such as Steelray Project Viewer, Seavus Project Viewer, Project Viewer 365 (for Android) and Moos. It cannot also be edited by them however, this has to be done using its native software.
How to open an MPP file
You need a suitable software like Project to open an MPP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MPP format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the MPP files produces the following result:
MPP is a very widely used file extension. The file type mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in MPP files:
- 97% of all MPP files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The internal app name of MPP files is Microsoft Project or MSProject. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 74b78f3a-c8c8-11d1-be11-00c04fb6faf1 or 72fd3320-9a05-11cf-85a4-00a0c904de5f. Sections and streams in the file are named SummaryInformation, CompObj, DocumentSummaryInformation, 114, 214 and Props14. The files are on average 600 KB in size and range from 270 KB to 2 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. These files can be linked to project, plan, schedule, terminplan, projektplan, projekt, planning and timeline.
All other MPP files (3%) have no uniform format. Tagged as programme, master, gantt, cronograma, rahmenterminplan or ablaufplan. If you want to find out which format your MPP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .mpp file to analyze".
