All about MPS Files
The MPS file type is primarily associated with MapSource.
What is an MPS file
File structure: Because of its age, MPS is a format optimized for punch cards: it's a column-oriented ASCII file typically written in uppercase. Some of the sections used in the file are as follows:
- 'NAME' (stores a chosen name for the problem)
- 'ROWS' (defines the names of all constraints)
- 'COLUMNS' (contains the entries of the A-matrix)
- 'RHS' (allows defining right-hand-side vectors)
- 'BOUNDS' (specifies lower and upper bounds on individual values)
- 'RANGES' (specifies double-inequalities).
Compatible software: MPS files are supported by most commercial linear programming software as well as the open-source COIN-OR system.
Related formats: There exists an extended MPS format (XMPS) that adds support for linear and integer programs to include NLPs (Non-Linear Programs), as well as the NL format that has taken away a lot of the popularity from the MPS formats.
How do you open MPS files?
You need a suitable software like MapSource to open an MPS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MPS format details:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the MPS files produces the following result:
The MPS file extension is rather rarely used and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all MPS files are Garmin MapSource data files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 28 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 100 KB in size. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MsRcd. Files like these have the following tags: waypoints and trip.
- 6% of all MPS files start with the bytes NAME , which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 16 KB to 160 KB in size. The keywords NAME and ROWS are typical for these files.
All other MPS files (54%) have no consistent format, often e.g. Max Payne 1 Savegame and LAB. Files like these are sometimes linked to savegame, capture or mapro. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MPS file!

an mps GPS waypoints file is a special file format by Garmin and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MPS files
- Associate the MPS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open gps waypoints files. Because only the current version supports the latest MPS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Garmin manufacturer website after an available MapSource update.
- To make sure that your MPS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MPS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
