Opening an MPX File
The MPX file type is primarily associated with Project.
What is an MPX file?
- File structure: The MPX format defines an ASCII file that allows the transfer of project information that cannot appear in a table, such as detailed resource assignment information, calendar information, and information in the "Project Info" dialog box. This file consists of records separated by carriage returns and line feeds. Within each record are fields that contain information on the project. The types of records and their order are set. While it doesn't have to contain all record types, it always begins with a 'File Creation' record.
- Compatibility: The ability to save in the MPX format has been discontinued in version 2000, while the ability to read the format is supported up to version 2010. Other software solutions that can read MPX files include the previously mentioned Primavera and Sciforma.
How to open MPX files
You need a suitable software like Project to open an MPX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the MPX files produces the following result:
MPX is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

Customary file names are \\commands\, \\commands\1\command.json, \\commands\1\groups\, \\commands\1\groups\2\group.json, \\project_metadata.json, \\sheets\ and \\sheets\0\sheet.json. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. A typical file size is 110 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as /project_metadata.json. Files like these have the following tags: minitab, analysis, data, practica and study.
- 25% of all MPX files are associated with Microsoft Project exported data. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. MPX files are between 2 KB and 180 KB in size.
