All about MS Files
The MS file type is primarily associated with 3DS Max.
What is an MS file?
How to open MS files
You need a suitable software like 3DS Max to open an MS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MS file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the MS files produces the following result:
The MS file ending covers a large number of different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 20% of all MS files start with the magic bytes 01 32 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. MS files are between 150 KB and 4 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The following keywords are characteristic: GC / MS DATA FILE. A common filename is DATA.MS or dataSim.ms.
- 10% of all MS files utilize the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This Windows file format has features similar to those of a filesystem format with virtual files and subfolders. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). MS files contain an app name Microsoft Word or Windows Installer XML Toolset. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 000c1084-0000-0000-c000-000000000046 or 00020d0b-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The internal containers are called SummaryInformation. The average file size is 690 KB with most files being between 51 KB and 9 MB in size.
All other MS files (70%) have no consistent format, frequently e.g. Source and WordPerfect. These files sometimes refer to switch, pokemon, gfbmdl, converter, export or batch. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MS file!

an ms script is a special file format by Autodesk and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MS files
- Associate the MS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest MS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Autodesk manufacturer website after an available 3DS Max update.
- To make sure that your MS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
